The global coronavirus pandemic spotlighted personal safety, revealing all the ways we might come in contact with germs and infections. The reality check has inspired designers and inventors to think up ways to keep people safe. Elepsy is one of those things. It’s a device designed to address any concerns about fruits and vegetables being potentially contaminated.

Such produce sits on the shelves in the store exposed. Before even getting there, they pass through who knows how many hands and environments from farm to store. And unlike meat and eggs that get cooked before consumption killing off microorganisms, fruits and vegetables are often eaten raw. Some people may even use soap or chemicals to disinfect such food, worrying that water isn’t good enough, but that’s potentially hazardous too. Plus, it wastes a lot of water.

The Elepsy sanitizes your fruits and veggies, so they’re safe for consumption without the use of disinfectants. The safe sanitizing-station cleans your food using a dual-stage process: it cleans the dirt off your food using ultrasonic vibrations and then sanitizes it through electrolysis.

The device consists of three pieces: a carafe for water measuring, a sanitization-unit, and an outer tray to place fruits and vegetables once the cleaning process is over.

How It Works:

  • To begin, you remove the transparent carafe off the sanitization-unit (the base). Fill it with water.
  • Put the dirty items in the sanitation-tub and pour the water in.
  • Turn the knob on the base to the designated cycle and press to confirm.
  • From here, the Elepsy does the rest. It gets the dirt off by passing ultrasonic vibrations through the water, then instantly kills any germs in a non-toxic way by electrolyzing the water.
  • When the sanitization is done, a bell will sound, letting you know your food is clean.
  • Take the items out and place them on the tray to dry.

Electrolux challenged industrial design students at Umeå Institute of Design (UID) to come up with ideas. That’s how it came to be that students of UID and Electrolux collaborated to make the Elepsy. The concept was born as a solution to post-Covid-19 home situations. It was one of four designs that arose from the challenge.

Thomas Johansson, Design Director, Electrolux, said:

Enhancing home experiences is embedded in our DNA. A key part of the work reflects the need to meet adapted behavior during corona. With more time spent at home, there is an increased focus on the quality, performance, and design of household appliances. We are also seeing a greater interest in hygiene and sanitization. This makes the partnership with the next generation of design talent, working together to find solutions to help people, to enrich life, and to shape living for the better, particularly rewarding.

Elepsy is a kitchen-household item that helps people by allowing them to disinfect their fruits and vegetables. It’s also convenient because the tray can be detached and used as a serving plate. Furthermore, the function is enhanced by a pleasing aesthetic. People can enjoy the object as a decorative item that enables them to feel safer in their daily lives.
